RE: Exhaust manifold-downpipe studs? Replaceable?

OK, I was about to replace the downpipe on my '88 16v, and now
everyone has me all scared. So, let me ask, how often do these studs
break? Is it highly likely that I am going to break at least one?
What precautions (aside from the obvious liquid wrench) should I take
to try and not break one?
The goal is to overcome the deliberate nature of the process.
