RE: 5w-20w - theory
Just as with hydraulic heads, thinner oil may be able to squeeze into
clogged or dirty places better than the thick, supplying more cushion to the
affected parts.
May be time for a kerosine cleanout. Carefully done, might be worth it, any
experience out there doing this?

Kervin-
You are correct, 5w-20 is too thin except when temperatures don't get
above freezing. I couldn't tell you why the new, thinner oil would make a
ticking go away on a non-hydraulic lifter engine. Anyone else got a theory?

I was spacing out in Walmart Sunday and I got a case of 5w-20w oil. I
changed my oil and put on a new VW filter (first time I used a genuine
one). Here's the weird part. My engine was making a ticking noise
before (with 20w-50w). I was pretty sure the bearings on bottom were
scored because there was very little oil in the car when I bought it
(The oil was all in the coolant from a leaky oil cooler). After the
may-be-to-light oil change, the motor is really quiet. It's a JH with
about 150,000 miles. Is there anyone that is using 5-20w in a JH for a
long time. I went and got some 20w-50w tonight that I plan to put in on
Sunday, but I wanted some thoughts from others.
