That's exactly what both my Rabbit and my old Mercury 428 sounded like when the bearing was just starting to go bad - kind of a rapid hollow knock or rattle at medium load or partial-throttle deceleration, usually only in a narrow rpm range - don't remember just where but probably around 4000 in my VW. As the bearing disintegrates it becomes louder and more "solid" sounding.

Pop your hood and rev the engine to make sure you can hear the knock, then pull off the spark wires one at a time and rev the engine again. When you pull the wire from the bad cylinder the knock will quiet down or go away altogether because there's no load on the piston. If you're really careful about things you can ground the plug wire, I usually don't bother. This works for main bearings too, except if it's one of the middle three bearings then it will quiet down when you pull the two wires that straddle it.
