Have you checked the wires at the starter since you installed it?  If the
heat sheild wasn't installed around the wires properly they will melt from
the exhaust manifold heat, and this could cause a short.  This happened on
my Rabbit, except that the main power wire from the battery and the ignition
switch wire crossed and melted together.  So the starter kept on running
until I disconnected the battery.
