humm sounds like you have a feedback ground effect unto that wire
(crossed??) letting the battery run x amps, too many through it, no
matter what you do in size it will fry it. perhaps your starter has
a defect causing this if you rewired it correctly that would be my
deduction as the wire from the pole to the solenoid is a rather
small gauge wire (to get the solenoid to pop the starter gear
forward unto the fly wheel. My long exasperating thinking out loud
final deduction is that your solenoid (if you re-wired that wire
properly in its place) is bad. and you need to change it.
