cutting out

hello,

I'm new to the board, and from Manchester, England.

I have a 1.8 carb 1989 scirocco gt, had it three years
and ever since i bought it it's had the usual cutting out
problem. Mine does it at around 75-80mph and gets worse
if driven all day, (goes down to 60).
Now i just did a bit of a service the other day, and changed
the fuel filter but was given a fuel filter that said on the packet
"up to 1600cc engines". Now the strange thing was, it was the same 
one that was in my car, so i took it back and the guy in the
shop said it was the one listed but gave me a bigger one
anyway. 
I fitted it and at the same time changed my fuel to the more 
expensive super unleaded petrol and amazingly it cured the
problem .............................................for about 1hour then 
and ever since i can get to 90-95 before it starts cutting out.
Now because I did make two changes I'm not sure which one
Semi-cured my problem, any ideas?
