On my 78 CIS, used to totally romove the thermostatically controlled 
(spring) mechanism and use some oversize flex hose to get cool air in. 

Only took a stubby Phillips head screwdriver.  Dunno about the later cars.

RE:  Power door lock/alarm interface:

Adding an aftermarket acutator is unnecessary complication.  You can 
replace with Quantum/Audi acutuator and just run extension of pneumatic 
line.  bTDT for 13 years in my 87

RE: Police road check

here in Ohio, they run liquor check, most frequently near outdoor musci 
venue when poplular music show is on.

AND they are considering running htem to snag unlicensed drivers...1984 
was long time ago..
