Just wanted to thank all the listers who sent me advice.

Some coaxing with a large screwdriver in the slot, and then careful
application of kinetic energy (bang on it with a block of wood and a
hammer), and it finally let go.

As expected, the ball joint now needs to be replaced, but it may have been
messed up before my "handywork".  <shrug>
