You can wire in the knock sensor on your car, and keep the CIS.

I've heard of the pistons hitting the valves, but it doesn't usually
happen, AFAIK.

If cost is an issue, how about just installing a good used long block
with a new clutch,
I did that on my RIP '81 Mars Red Scirocco and it ran strong.
The transaxle ratios in your '81 Scirocco are great for the 1.8L...
The Oddball Scirocco has a stock JH engine and to my surprise an FF
transaxle,
and the JH/FF combination rocks!
