Q's on Lightening a Flywheel

Basic question is how, where, and how much to lighten
a flywheel.  Also about balancing...are VW flywheels
balanced separately or with the rest of the engine
internals? 

Ben Harder says his lightened flywheel has the meat in
front of the ring gear (engine side) removed.  That's
cool, since it's just rotating mass, no mounting
surface there.  My question is, how much of it's
removed?  That part is where the balancing is done,
AFAIK.  So where to balance?
