I used high temp engine clear paint in a rattle can.  Dulled the finish
a little bit.  But it has never gotten any more dull in years. :)  Pep
Boys special, no drips, greying, chipping, whatever.  Still looks
decent years later.  Kevin, did you let it sit first to see how clear
it was going to be after it dried?
