My RIP '82 Scirocco did the same thing...

Check the fuel pickup in the tank, making sure everything is intact.

If it is gone, I sell reconditioned or new tanks for $150.

The reconditioned ones have a lifetime warranty, 
but they would need your tank first, since they are out of cores.
