I have read this 3 times now and my answer is based on what I think you are
trying to say...

you are experiencing Gear shifting problems? can't find 1rst gear at times,
and at times you shift into 5th to find yourself in 3rd.. right ?

If this is what I understood is right (gawd aufull english on my part...)
then I suggest you changing your linkage and bushings, it is easy to
perform, and probablly will resolve alot of your problems.

if the problem continues, then I would serious consider changing/repairing
your tranny, because it could be your "internal-shift-linkage" (forget the
exact name of it) that are dying inside and soon you will have no more gears
or only have 1 gear.

Usually when at a stop sign I put the 84 in 1st gear
but it is in 3rd gear and while driving going to
fourth to fith I go to third gear instead and I have
to shift again.  And later on I read reviews on the 84
Jetta Gli and many of the magazines had the same
problems as me is there a way to correct the shifting
to fith gear and into first without hitting 3rd gear
most of the time(running on 4k).  I know it is not
good for the car, but I can start the car off in third
without a problem and that is what I want to stop doing.
