   There is an indispensible manual for your Scirocco, it's called a Bentley
Manual.  In it you will find a method of adjusting the shifting mechanism.
It would be impossible for me to accurately describe how it's done, but the
manual has pictures to go with the excellent text.  While it isn't cheap
(around $45), you will find the Bentley invaluable when you are working on
your VW.
I don't believe yours is a common problem, but it may be a loose shifter rod
clamp.  The Bentley can help you if it is.
