tire reccommendation anyone

I'm looking at getting a new set of tires and would like some 
recommendations.  I'm currently riding a set of Nitto-505 205-40/16 but 
would like to switch to a  softer ride. Someone reccommended that I go w/ a 
215-40/16? Can i get away w/ this on my 88 Scirocco 16v?

Any other size or brand recommendations would be appreciated. Looking for a 
long tread wear, soft ride, good handling, and wet weather traction.
