Sounds like a stock non-S Scirocco if you ask me. :)

RUST.
Since you're in the Northern Illinois / Southern Wisconsin
area, this thing is probably pretty eaten away underneath.
Check the floor under the fenders (where they're already
eaten away) and most of all, check out the rocker panel /
floor just ahead of where the rear axle attaches to the
body. Any softness there means the car's days are
numbered. Any holes and it has even less time. You could
use this as a bargaining point and get the car cheaper that
way, then decide if you want to spend several hundred
dollars fixing it, or just drive it all winter and beyond
'til the rear end rust progresses to the point of being
unsafe to drive. Keep an eye on it closely.
That's my $.02, keep us posted on what you decide to do.
