I am currently running the following on my Mk1 Scirocco's.
195/50/15's (AVS int.) on 15X7 Ronal R-10's (OK but watch out for curb
damage on 15X7 rims)
195/55/14's (SP-8K)on 14X7 Revolution RFX's (Probably the best setup for
Mk1's IMHO)
I will be running  the following as soon as I can afford the tires.
215/45/15's (Toyo Proxes T1-S) on 15X7 BBS RS's
According to calculations, the 215/45/15's are a good tire choice for the
15x7 rim and are the same diameter as the 195/50/15's but an inch or so
wider.
I just hope rolling the fenders is all that is needed for clearance.
I believe the 215's are only available in two tires:
Toyo Proxes T1-S 
Dunlop SP-2000
