RE: Rear discs A1
Uh, a BTDT that cost me >$20 + time to find out. Ordered from Potter.
Got the alter rear discs. In ignorance, flipped over. Issues are:
Parking brake Bowden cable will not meet up exactly with later cable
stop. Dunno how this would be long term, you could make up adapter out
of some tubing I think so housing would have proper anchor. But,
loosening the cable at parking brake interior handle allowed it to operate.
Second issue: You'd have to have either MityVac-type or pressure bleeder
'cause the bleeder valve is not the high point anymore. IE, you should
bleed before installing on carriers, obviating the manual brake- pump
method unless you're v. careful.
Third issue: The calipers are nicer and have beefier 11mm hex bleeder
valve so you might not have them break off.
Fourth issue: You might have to get tool when it comes time to turn the
pistons in; newer ones don't use 12mm hex recess.
Rebuilding: I think its just the rubber bits. IMO, rear calipers go
away because the parking brake mechanism rusts up. On both sets of new
ones I melted Cosmoline-type grease over shafts so they might work as long
as the OEMS. Will not buy another rebuilt unless they are gonna come
out and replace them when the fail (Have gone through 6+ on two cars in
rust belt Ohio). On the 20V Audi list it was claimed if you disassemble
and lube internally, they never fail. The rebuilts I have bought are no
bargain, they border on criminal fraud IMO.
A family friend had me recently help him with paper work on class-action
against GM for brake problems on Lumina? type cars. Guy had to replace
his rears, too. Maybe when they get done with that or big Tobacco they
can help us small guys.
