it.  My question - is there any way to switch the factory sunroof over
to a scirocco without a factory sunroof?  Has anyone ever done this, and
what might be involved?

To do this with nice results you need too change the complete roof, preferably top/bottom of A,B and C pillar.
Just welding in the missing piece will make your roof like waves on it.
