I used to own an '84 Scirocco. I actually bought it
with less than 21,000 miles on it. It was in excellant
condition, indeed it looked like it was brand new. Now
I have an 85 8v and an 87 16v. The '84 was a nice car
but was a little less rowdy than the 16v. My
impression, having driven the 16v for a month is that
the 16v only starts to pull away from the 8vs at
higher speeds. Up there, you CAN tell a difference!
Down low they are similar. I would say the 16v handles
better but not on rougher road surfaces. Sometimes,
with current driving conditions, the 8v makes more
sense. The 16v is more of a high speed beast, and
there are so many more people on the road these days,
you can't really use it the way it "wants" to be used.
Low end torque seems to be a better choice, and the 8v
can give you that. As for the price, I payed much less
than that for my 16v, than the asking price for this
'84. And anytime you start talking rebuilds I get
nervous. I don't always trust the people who do these
things. Rebuilt engines don't always last as long as
you think they will, or at least that is my
experience. I also don't get into picking up a car
that was someone elses never finished project,
especially someone you never met. I reccomend being
wary. If you want the car, make much lower offer, but
obviously not what he/she is asking for. I did that on
the 16v and got a pleasant suprise.
