are you sure the TDC mark on the cam gear you're looking at is the one on
the _inside_ of the gear? I've got a gear from a newer engine (when they
switched to the lighter gears) and it has three(!) marks on it, the
_correct_ on the inside of the gear, the wrong one on the outside, and
another one on the outside that doesn't look like a dot in the metal, but
like a dash with two leters around it (I or E or something). Just be sure
what your looking at! :)
You can't install the cam gear in the wrong position, unless you didnt put
the woodruff key in cam! Oh crap, please tell me you didn't do that! :)
dont run the motor if you forgot the key, otherwise the valves might hit
the piston when the gear slips. (depending on your engine)
