16V problems

Your engine maladies resemble at faulty knock sensor.  If you can turn 
the car off, then upon restarting, its got power, suspect the knock 
sensor system.  Make up cheap LED test light and follow Bentley.


My $0.02 on the engine ground problem:

Ideal to avoid ground loops is central "star" hookup.
If you attach big ground wire to one of your starter bolts and -use- 
your Scirocco, you may find the bolts coming loose.  Not sure its 
necessary, there's lots of cross sectional area and good connections for 
grounds to flow through mechanical connections of starter.--
