I haven't ben up under a fully assembled 16v before (shame on me) but
when I change my coolant I pull the small elbow pipe off the bottom of
the water pump and let things drain out. This is were the thermostat is
btw.
Refilling means i disconnect the top hose off the front of the engine
and fill the block from there, reattach and fill the radiator. Now,
later cars than my Mk1 have the overflow tank as an external bottle and
hoses that means that the coolant flows continuously around and around
and doesn't need to 'burp' the air bubbles out. But safer than sorry i
say. Fill the block directly.
Consider going Phosphate free coolant (Prestone orange stuff) or the
expensive stuff from the dealer. DON'T let the old stuff mix with the
new stuff. Back flush the whole system (inc. heater core) before
refilling.
