Re: broken odometer

man, this comes up every other day (just pointing out, not bitching).
for those of you who keep the messages for the archive please forward
them to scott, here.
the problem is one of two things. either the little red gear on the
end of the main odo or the rod connecting to the turning wheel at the
other end of the main odo. to fix the first, replace the gear (they're
usually cracked). to fix the latter, remove the rod, burr the end of it
(with a knife), and put it back it (it'll be a tight fit). ultimately,
find a new odo (easier mnost of the time). to get to your odo:
1) center steering wheel and remove the two screws holding the cluster
frame in place.
2) remove the screw holding the cluster in place.
3) if you're really good, remove the two electrical connections and
speedo cable
3a) since most of us are this dexterous, you can remove the front three
posts from underneath the knee pad and remove the screw on the drivers'
side wall. you can then reach up and disconnect the wires.
4) push the drivers' side of the cluster in, pull out on the passenger
side and pull it out through the large hole in the steering wheel.
5) remove the lightbulbs (two at top, one for the clock)
6) remove the eight gold screws on the rear of the cluster and CAREFULLY
pull the guts out. (now may be a good time to think about changing your
instrument cluster lighting if you want (tutorial on my site) and/or
installing custom gauge faces (contact brett or goto my page and look
under personal links under 'vw').
7) CAREFULLY remove the speedo needle (can break VERY easily). remove
the two screws holding the gauge face on.
8) (since this is the same year & type of scirocco i have, i'll step out
on a limb here) there should be a clear speedo unit behind the face with
a circuit board running around it. press the little tabs outward and
pull up on the circuit board to remove it.
9) remove the four screws holding the odo unit in place. pry up on the
part where it connects to the speedo needle and pop it off.
10) lift out odo unit and inspect it. try holding the numbers in place
while turning the red gear on the edge. if the gear spins and the rod
doesn't, replace the gear. if the rod does turn, pull it out, burr the
end, and put it back in (you can also adjust your mileage as necessary).
11) installation is the reverse of above. make sure, however, that you
allow for spring tension on the part that connects to the speedo needle
(it pulls the needle back down to 0).
sorry if this is long. i'll try to make a tutorial out of it and post
it on my site with the other tutorials. this isn't a difficult
procedure, just time consuming and tedious. good luck.
