broken odometer

Hey everybody,
	I just bought an '86 8V Scirocco only to find out on the way home that
the odometer doesn't work. I guess I was so excited about the rest of
the car that I overlooked it. It's weird because a few days after I got
it the trip started working for about 9 miles and then it stopped. Also,
the real miles randomly turned for a few miles and then stopped. 
Anyway, I wanted to ask for some help before I go crawling under the
dash looking for the problem. Thanks in advance for the help.
