As far as a 50mm intake manifold giving you more power on your 1.8L 16v,
I'd start someplace else for better bang-for-buck improvements (like
a 2L block for about the same money). It's about volume of air and
the *velocity* of that moving intake air that helps determine what
the power output of you engine is, and at what rpm. The 50mm intake
manifold will nicely feed an air hungry engine, which with a 1.8L is
at the high end, and with a 2L is noticably lower in the rpm range.
The stock 40 (is is it 42mm) intake keeps up the air velocity to
give a better low end, while the 50mm intake wakes up the high end a
bit.  I personally think it's a good mod for a 2L 16v, but not a 1.8L;
as low end drivability could be affected too much. IMHO naturally. :)
