I put a 5 speed into my '78 also.  I changed the short horizontal rod(with 
the plastic ends) and the "ball" and the "box" linkage(where the ball is 
"boxed" in).  There's not much difference in the parts, in fact I changed to 
the 5 speed linkage many years ago and still had the 4 speed in.  No problems.
