oil temp gauge installation

I'd like to install an oil temperature gauge in my '86 8V. And I really do 
want temperature, not pressure. Two questions:

1. Any recommendations for an inexpensive, reasonable quality kit?
2. How does the oil temperature sensor typically mount? I assume I don't need 
to drill a hole in the head or anything so brutish ...
