no, not synonymous, but all 16V heads happen to be X-flow heads...

that's the intake manifold.  the air chamber right after the throttle
has four runners that each go forward (over the valve cover) and down to
an intake port on the front of the engine.

i have heard of 8V crossflow heads for VW, that's probably what those
guys were talking about.  never seen one in person, but i have seen
pictures in the net, can't remember where though...
