Some people wouldn't consider this to be a true crossflow design. They
would contend that a real crossflow must have the intake valve on the intake
side of the head and the exhaust valve on the exhaust side so that the flow
is continuous from one side of the head to the other. On volkswagen 8 valve
heads, both the intake and exhaust valves are in the center of the head
aligned along the long access. This allows VW to actuate the valves
directly with one cam. The other arrangement would require either two cams
or some sort of rocker arm setup.
