Relocating gas cap >>

I saw an mk1 rocco somewhere with the gas cap moved to the rear, behind 
the license plate. This is the trickest mod for someone who doesn't have 
a cover (as in all mk1's) and doesn't have a locked gas tank...

Anyone done this before? I'd imagine it would be a pretty simple job? 
Run the fuel hose up under the rear fender and pop it through the spare 
wheel well or someplace? Would this setup be safe? I'm about to do the 
paint job so I'd love to get rid of that "scar" on the right-rear 
quarterpanel. 

imagine the confused attendants at the local Shell ;)
