RE: suspension mystery solved (MK1 weld up that strut tower at Dave's)
Dave’s is not just a great place to get your alignment done.
Last week I had them weld up my strut towers on the MK1.
They did a great job for $60.00. If you have a MK1 check to
see if your towers are separating from the body. Look along
the top of the fender and if you see cracks it is time to weld up
the car. First separate the top of the fender from the body.
Use a knife to break up the glue. Weld and paint. Then reassemble
the fender bolts.
Dale at Dave’s did a great job!! The car is one now!
" dial the Potterman and set up your car"
Yes I did that too!

Well finally thanks to the holiday I had a chance to take it to a "real"
alignment specialist - Dave's Frame and Alignment in Huntington Beach, for
those of you in SoCal. This is the ONLY guy that Ron Wood of VW
Specialties
trusts. Now I understand why. Turns out I had one degree of toe out on
the
right side while the left was ok, and I don't even know what was up with
the
camber settings. But now I have a "compromise" setup of zero toe and -1
negative camber, and all is well! Car goes where it's pointed, corners
better,
doesn't wander, steering wheel now centered, etc.. thanks to all of you who
had various suggestions of what might be to blame.
Moral of the story is - when getting an alignment, find somebody whom you
KNOW is going to do it right - there are more places that will screw it up
than will do it right, in my experience.. oh yeah, and Dave's only charges
$35! Not only are they the best, they're also the cheapest..
Moral #2 - if you can dig up the cash someplace, dial the Potterman and
set up your car with the same stuff - it freakin' ROCKS!!
