Coolant smell,low heating, more Q's

slight coolant smell sometimes.   Heater Core??  That's the consensus.  Yet,
some say to flush out the system.
Should I flush it out?    or
Change the heater core even thou the smell is not that bad.  As mentioned, I
don't want to do a "fix on the side of the road"
What's involved in changing the heater core?
Should I buy new or used?   How much??
