'89 GT 1.6L 8v - Update
<x-flowed>Thanks for the heads up on the single wiper conversion folks. I went ahead
and did it this weekend. It was a bit more trouble than I anticipated but
it came out pretty well. There was a mild snow this morning in London which
made me think about whether it was a wise move but this isn't a daily driver
so I guess it'll be alright.
Sent the car off the VW for a check up. They steam cleaned the engine
compartment, changed the oil and tuned up the engine... The car is purring
like a kitten now, albeit a kitten with some slight bladder problems. It's
still leaking a bit of oil you see... from the distributor and the oil
sensor (which I changed), maybe elsewhere. At least it's not burning oil.
Got new brakes as well! A nice set of german made Zimmerman cross drilled
rotors I saw in a magazine. They were on sale for 59 Gbps (us$100) and I've
yet to install them. Now I'm debating on whether I should get new calipers
and braided steel brake lines. Recommendations? Braided lines made a huge
difference (feedback) for my motorcycle but I'm not sure if they'll do the
same for the car.
Installed the new radio. Speakers were stock but still sounded decent.
I'll probably want to replace them but that can wait until my next trip to
the states.
Tinted my windows also 20% in the back 35% in the front. I think it give
the car a more aerodynamic look my Rocco came with the 16v body panels and
the MK2 wing.
My grille was cracked so I glued it together. I also went to a hardware
store and bought a brass mesh grill. I painted it black and put it in place
of the old grile. It looks sick! I'll try to scan a picture and post it
on the web sometime. I'll be visiting a scrap yard to see if I can find a
Scirocco emblem to put in the lower righthand corner of the mesh grile.
It's so easy to do and makes the car look nice.
Call me cheesy but I painted my rims. I have these ugly pirrelli rims and
they're missing caps etc... so I painted the center black and left only
about 3/4" around the edges the same color. Looks homemade up close, but
much better than before. these will be my winter tires and I'll probably
invest some money on nice tires for the summertime.
Set aside some cash to get the car lowered. I found a shop that'll do it
for about $500, including the kit. Seems reasonable, no? I'm thinking 45mm
or so...
and in a couple of months the top comes off. I bought all the hardware for
making the top removable. Can't wait. Once the top comes off and the car
is OK, I'll lower it and buy the new wheels/tires.
Hope this was semi-interesting,
Armando
