My hatch won't latch!!!!!!!!

My rear hatch on my 16v all of the sudden will not latch and stay shut now... 
 AARRRGHHHH!!!!!  So basically anyone could walk up to my car in a parking 
lot and open it...  I tried spraying lube into the mechanism but it still 
won't latch!  Does anyone know any tricks so I do not have to tear it apart?
