odd dying out

I've just bought an 82 8v scirocco and have experienced few problems
with it, considering it has 187K.  Twice in a few days the engine died
and would not start again.  The motor sounded like it was being
strangled.  Does this sound familiar to anyone?  There is a a fairly big
oil leak from valve cover and oil pan, but not enough to cause low oil
problems.  Any help appreciated.
