question for the list from a newbie

Howdie, i joined this list under the chance tht within a few days i 
will be a scirocco owner, so here are my questions:
I have always been a  VW owner(or rather my family has) from 
rabbit's to busses to jetta GLI, to vanagon syncro, but this would 
the first scirocco. It is located in Vermont, and is an 86 5 speed 
with 143,000 miles on it. Apparently there are no leaky fluids(other 
than the alwasy present slight bit of oil around the head gasket) 
and has never leaked at all. They are selling it with both all season 
tires, and a set of 4 Pirreli Tires with low profile Goodyears on them 
and a donut spare as well as a full size spare.
My 2 questions are thus:
1) What should i make sure to look for when i go look at it, 
anything in particular that could clue me in to possible problems?
and 
2) what should be the price i pay for this, they are asking $1650
but i was wondering from all of you if that seems to be a correct, or 
over/underflated price.
