I put mine in the rear hatch of my '81, but I used a piece of 1/2" plywood
since mine is missing the factory hatch cover. I'm not really satisfied
with the results, though, and I plan on making a pair of custom boxes to
mount next to the strut towers back there. After I get that done, I'll
make another hatch cover to fit between the speaker boxes.
The big thing with the factory hatch cover will probably be the weight of
the speakers. I first used 1/4" plywood, but it sagged immediately from
the weight.
As far as the gas struts that hold the cover up when you open the hatch are
concerned, I had already replaced mine because they wouldn't hold up even
the hatch by itself. The new ones do just fine.
I bought some pretty cool hinges at a hardware store to hinge the plywood.
They sit pretty flat, and are almost invisible when covered with carpeting.
What I'm going to do when finances allow is buy some black upholstery
material to finish the new hatch cover with. I think I can chisel some
notches into the plywood to recess the hinges into, and hopefully, they'll
be invisible afterward.
Now, if I can just find a cool place for the amp, I'll be happy!
