88' Jetta GL stalls when cold...

I have a 88' Jetta GL , 5speed which stalls when you first start it up and try to
drive away
in it...
 if it sits for a few minutes and warms up, then the car will drive fine and will
not stall a
few yards down the road as it normally does...
  any ideas...
