I've had a couple go bad in my '86 8v. And it was damn obvious when the
went, too. Both times I was on the freeway doing between 65 and 75 mph.
It wasn't until I let off the gas that heard this God-awful grinding sound
coming from the wheel. The first time, I wasn't sure what had happened.
When it happened the second time, it was pretty clear. It turned out that
part of my problem was a spun steering knuckle (wheel bearing carrier)!
The other part of my problem was that I hadn't torqued it down to a
whopping 175 ft lbs after the first replacement. When I put everything
together the second time, you can bet I torqued it down to about 185 ft
lbs. If I never have to go through all that crap again, it'll still be too
soon....
