shift bushings

The reason I was trying to take off my intake manifold was so that I
could more easily get to the oxygen sensor. After I failed at the
intake manifold I managed to still get the sensor out. I was hoping
that my car had been running lean and therefor hot and that replacing
the sensor might keep it from running lean. Someone tell me what the
sensor controls, does it only add more fuel if it detects the exhaust
lean or cut some out if it detects it rich or both? I really have no
idea if it was running lean except that I think it has been running hot
because it seems to be melting the shift linkage bushings. I've been
through two sets of bushings, the one clear soft rubber one closest to
the exhaust manifold seems to get most of the abuse. I didn't have this
problem with the stock german ones that were there but unfortunately I
replaced all the bushings, not just the time worn ones, and threw out
the original ones. Has anyone else had this problem with the bushings?
Also, two of the harder white ones seemed to have slop straight out of
the packaging. I wrapped them with some teflon tape and that snugged
them up for a little while. I have also been using moly grease on them
as well. What's the deal? enlighten me someone, please.
