It's probably that shift selector rod thing which has this big ball bushing on the end of it that always falls 
off and that makes a TON of slop after it's in gear.  It adds about 1-2" of movement!  Replacing it 
makes shifting SO much nicer.  It's only about $5 and will help a lot.  Good luck,
