Like I said, I'm new at this UNDER THE HOOD thing. I"m 18 yrs old, and have
been fidling under the hood w/ this thing for 18 mos. Mostly bolting on
mods, such as stress bars, steering wheels, exhaust, harnesses, polyurethane
engine mounts/various bushings, etc. I have gotten down and dirty a few
times when I did my friend's COMPLETE exhaust, and his clutch. I also hit a
curb and replaced a $175 rim, $130 tire, $100 half shaft, $130 control arm,
$130 tokico strut, $50 strut housing. That was....nice....Also, I did the
5th gear conversion which most people wouldn't give 2 seconds of thought
about undertaking, but not much more than that. The tie rod just looked
messy, cramped, and pointless in doing myself. It isn't something I'll be
messing w/ in the future, it aint something I want to learn more about, etc.
I said screw it. It goes into the steering rack, and I think the
regular/power steering differs right there. I could be wrong though.
Anyone? I was also 2 days away from leaving for school, and didn't want to
get in a jam w/ that, so I said, "Here, VW."

Oh geez. A slightly modded 16v will whoop that anyday. I'm already taking
camaro's and most mustangs. In fact, that new Firebird w/ the race
package/6speed? I was neck/neck w/ it off the line up until 110 mph until I
shifted into 5th, because I have that weak-but-good-for-highway 5th gear.
W/ the maxxed out G60 (217hp) on a 2287lb car (Scirocco), I will match a
Viper, seriously, provided I have the traction. I am going to try the
Velocity mini slip kit first, since it's $700 cheaper than the Quaiffe.
How do I know this?
I found a little Car Test program on the 'net--
It has a lot of cars already programmed in--not overkill detailed, but
enough to get somewhat accurate 0-60, 1/4 mile, etc times on cars. You can
change any of it to fit your modded car. Ride height, new front spoiler, hp
kits, rev limiter, displacement, turbo'd, weight, etc.
Again, just for kicks, I put th 217 hp G60 in a Scirocco II bodystyle (among
other things, it's 600lbs lighter than a G60 Corrado):
0-60: 5.3sec
1/4 mile: 13.4 @ 109mph
top speed: 152 @ 82 sec
The stock figures (preprogrammed) put out stock measurements, so it's fairly
accurate, provided you take into consideration things such as traction.
Putting those engines in our FWD cars will also require many other things,
(Quaiffe/Velocity kit ) to even come close to that figure, but it's nice to
know what's out there. If anyone wants this, email me. It's fun.
BTW, w/ the 2.0L G60 kit and P/P head, 0-60 gets bumped to 4.6, 1/4 mile to
12.6sec. That'll be sweet, but not until summer '98.
