Advance Timing on a 16v? Speedy response please

I can't remember if or why it is bad to advance the timing on a 16v.  I
think it is but I need to know for sure because a friend of mine just did it
on his car ( he doesn't know what he' sdoing though)  and he wants to drive
but I thought it was a bad idea.  I didn't see if Jay posted this already so
