This is my 1987 Scirocco 16v. It currently has only 47,000 miles on it, and it's Flash Silver Metallic with a black leather interior. Modifications / Improvements: My goal is to take the wonderful foundation that VW supplied, and custom tailor it to my own personal perfection. I've always thought that the best modifications are the ones that improve what's already there without adding any negative side effects. So, with that in mind, I set out to help the car do everything it did before... only better. 1. Neuspeed Upper Stress Bar: This 5-minute bolt-on bar reduces body flex in the front of the car, providing more predictable handling, quicker turn-in, and a stiffer structure. 2. ABD Short-shift kit and shift weight Another easy install; this kit reduces the fore-aft throw of the shifter by up to 50%, and the weight helps the shifter to glide smoothly into each gear. It feels great. 3. Tinted Windows What's a car without tint? Spoiled by how great it looks, and the reduced glare at night, this car sports 30% tint on the side windows, and 20% on the rear window, except for the bottom portion under the spoiler, which is 30% for added visibility while backing up at night. 4. European Headlights In addition to looking beautiful, these lights can shine! Running directly off the battery, I have 4 40-Amp Bosch relays running 90/100w H4s and 100w H3s for a total of 180w low beam and a blinding 400w of high beams. Visibility is the best safety feature there is, and with those kinds of wattages, I can see in any conditions. And yet the European beam pattern is cut off at the bumper level, so I don't blind any oncoming cars. For fun, I have deep purple city lights which come on with the parking lights. See my page at http://members.aol.com/vwmon for detailed instructions on how to wire relays into your light system. 5. Suspension I wanted a suspension set up that didn't sacrifice road comfort, but would improve handling, and absorb bigger bumps without bottoming out, and I got exactly what I wanted. I have a set of H&R Lowering Springs, which lower the car about an inch- but their progressive rates allow greater dampening of small surface irregularities, and firm, controlled response to deep potholes and large bumps. Combined with Boge TurboGas shock absorbers, the ride is even smoother than stock and handles big bumps better... without any body roll. This was a win-win upgrade. 6. Power Locks and Keyless Entry My Scirocco came without the power package, so I didn't have power door locks, and I was frustrated with fumbling with the key to lock the door after I got out- especially when it was raining. So, I installed power lock actuators and a keyless entry system from Parts Express Electronics. Now, I can lock or unlock my doors from 300 feet away. I've got a page in the works that will give detailed instructions on how to install the system. 7. Music Even though the 16v engine "sounds sweet", there are times when I'm sitting in traffic that I'd rather ear some other kinds of music. So, for that, I have a Pioneer DEH-53 CD Head Unit, and a Clarion 705 EQA 7-band Equalizer pushing 25w to each corner of the car. In the front, I've got 2 Cerwin-Vega SS-4602 4x6 2-way plates, and in the back I have 2 Cerwin-Vega SS-6903 6x9 3-ways. Just to make sure I can feel the music as much as I hear it, I have a Pyle 10" Sub tube running off a 150-watt Rockford-Fosgate 2.6 amp. And that's all so far. Of course, I have some other stuff on the burner, so drop by again soon! If you have any questions about me, my car, or anything else, drop me a line at jason@scirocco.org |
