My Scirocco is a late 84'. It is a little bit of a factory oddball car because it has a mixture of parts between an early 84' and an 85'. It has the wiring harness, small spare and twin fuel pumps like an 85' but has a small wing, a 4k gearbox and no blackout trim between the side windows.

I bought the car in December 10 years ago for $2000. At that time it had 67,000 miles on it and came with new a battery and tires. It was in perfect shape except it looked like it had never been waxed. I brought it home and cleaned thoroughly. After some buffing and waxing the car came out looking great, much better than I had ever hoped.

I had been autocrossing for several years before I bought the car and started racing this one at the first event of the year. I picked up some BFG R1's and an extra set of factory wheels and off I went. I ran it stock for around 2 years before I gave up the idea of beating Saturns and Civics, then I blindly decided to take up the finical burden of running street prepared and haven't looked back since.

I have a lot of fun with the car and still drive it to every event. It is a very competitive car and has done quite well in the past when I've ventured out in to the Cendiv series with it. Jason Tipple runs our local events (OVR) and is a good friend of mine. He was 8th at nationals this year in his Rabbit GTI and we have usually been very close here, with him winning all the time. Unfortunately I'm not as fast as I've been in past as I had a small stroke 2 years ago (I'm only 33!) that has affected the sensitivity of my left foot. The car needs to be left foot braked to go quickly and my finesse at doing this isn't what it used to be. I wasn't allowed to drive for 9 months (pure hell) after the stroke and that's made me quite rusty also. My foot's slowly coming back and I hope to be beating Jason next year. I still make it out to all the local events and plan to run some Cendivs again next year.

This will probably be the last year I run this car as I plan to scavenge the drive train and all the parts to put in the 79 I am restoring in my garage. I have a 3 to 5 year plan to get the car together, get a trailer and get to nationals. What's left after that will be combined with the 85' I'm driving on the street right now to make a nice driver or possible show car. I haven't decided yet.

Here is a list of parts and modifications on the car right now. I am a mechanical designer and have fabricated several pieces myself or with the help of my friends.

Engine / Intake:
-Rebuilt cylinder head 4 years ago with new valve springs and valve guides.
(Less than 1000 miles on it)
-Group A thin head gasket (instead of milling the head down)
  -Viton valve seals
  -Bellevue Motorsports header
  -Bellevue Motorsports ported intake manifold
  -Neuspeed large throttle body
-Holley Pro-Strip ignition system with multiple
   spark and programmable ignition curve
-MSD small block Chevy crank trigger system
modified to fit on a fabricated undersized billet aluminum crank pulley.
-Custom fabricated lower motor mount with anti-engine rotation device.
  -Upper and lower windage trays.
  -All air conditioning components removed
  -NGK GR5 V-Power plugs
  -Accel 300MPH whatever plug wires
-Locked down distributor from an 85' golf to work with above
-Air box has had the bottom cut out, K&N air filter and an ABD big bore
intake tube that's worth at least 5hp in looks alone.
-OMP limited slip differential (the Quaife is still
   better, at least for auto-x)
-2 " exhaust all the way back to one muffler w/o cat
   (Techtonics system)
-Lightened and balanced flywheel with 16V clutch.
  -3 piece short shift kit
  -Battery is in the trunk

I'm working on modifying the ignition system to have 4 separate coils.

Suspension:
  -Koni adjustable shocks
-Old style Neuspeed race springs on the front, Neuspeed linear rate golf
race springs on the rear with fabricated spring perches that lower the back
an additional 1 inch. (All of this is soon to be replaced by a set of coil-overs
   that I've half completed)
-Autotech 25mm front and 28mm rear sway bars
  -Neuspeed front upper stress bar
-Autotech front lower 4 point subframe
  -Autotech rear stress bar, polished
-All urethane bushings, including the upper strut bearings. I plan to experiment
with using some Teflon shims on the contact surfaces on some of the bushings
to help reduce friction while under load.
-13X8 MRT wheels with 225/45-13 Hoosier Auto-X tires, I'm still using the
bias-plys. Each wheel and tire weighs 11.5 lbs. when fully inflated. I have rim
halves to build 8 1/2" wheels and will try to get them on before next season.
-Street wheels are 14" MSW's with unimpressive Yokohama 378's

Interior:
  -Cobra Monaco Race seat
-TRW 5 point quick release harness
-MOMO steering wheel, I don't know which one but it was originally designed to
fit into a Trans Am racer. It has a very small diameter, maybe 12 to 12 1/2 inches.
-Some type of MOMO shift knob
-Autopower 4 point cage painted to match car color,
-Radio removed and replaced with a dead panel
-Oil temp, oil pressure and voltmeter where the
    ashtray used to be.
-Passenger seat and rear 1 piece bench are from a
   16V Scirocco.

The car is not driven daily and has not been for at least the last 5 years. It currently has 150,000 miles on it and is still going strong. The compression readings and oil pressure are still very good, but it is starting to blow a little smoke on those 5000 RPM starts. It might be time for an overbore kit.
