Two things to do right now.
Holy crap these have lube in them? You can change it?!?
What will they think of next?
I had one car (subaru) that would leak about a quart every two weeks.
Ran great but leaked. I figured it was getting an oil change slowly
over two months.
LOL Yes I am kidding about tranny lube changes. Not about that
beater subaru, I had. It was before I had management. I think I even
drove that 85 with it's original engine in for nearly 3 years without
an oil change. Again before I knew better. The guy that helped me
swap the 16v in threatened to kill me if I did that again. He was a
black belt I didn't screw with him. LOL

I assume that the dirt on the outside caused the tranny to run hot and cause the sludge. I know it's a total pain in the ass for some of you, but you might want to consider pressure washing your engine compartment and in particular the transmission.
