Yeah, that's strange. 1986, I was in 3rd grade, and I remember coming back inside from recess and the teacher had the TV set up and was watching it. Not sure I knew at the time how bad it was but I knew the teacher was upset. (there was a schoolteacher on board that trip)
I also remember the recent Columbia disaster on '03, it was a saturday, and I was coming home from work at the VW dealership in Baltimore. I was driving down Cold Spring Lane, right by the Loco Hombre and Sam's Bagels when I heard it on the radio.

People old enough will remember all the details about the day they learned
Kennedy was shot. I still have a very vivid memory of where and when, and
just about every details, about when I heard the first Shuttle exploded on
take off in the '80s.
