Tony,

Don't know if this is your situation, but IIRC, for (at least some) 8Vs, 
the replacement backup light switch had a different wiring configuration 
than the original.  There is a TSB on it. If you can't find it (and 
nobody else has it at hand, I will try to locate it for you.
