Hi,
I've been a long time on and off lurker on this list.
I have an '87 16V that has been sitting idle for a couple of years
and has to go. I'd like to see it go to a good home (ie: someone who
will appreciate it for what it is) so I thought I'd offer it to the
list before I give it to the local Volkswagon wrecker.
The car was a project car when I bought it, but I used it as a daily
driver. Still I would expect that the buyer would be looking for a
parts car or a project, not a daily driver since the car had a bit of
a rough time before I got it and has some rough edges.
I had to spend a lot to pass emissions, but I did eventually get a
legit certificate. Unfortunately I didn't drive the car for long
before financial and time constraints forced me to take it off the
road. It has been parked at our barn since, but we are moving to a
larger facility so it has to go.
When purchased, it suffered from some badly done body work (three
rear spoilers and a hood scoop) that have left some scarring, but I
removed as much of the crap as I could. My plan was to swap parts
with my other car to achieve a stock look and slip in a 2.0 L block,
but time and money intervened and I never got around to it.
The car was fully loaded when new. Unless otherwise noted the
original factory equipment still works.
? Frame is straight.
? Body has some minor dents and a few scratches.
? Mild body rust, mostly on the hood which is toast due to the scoop
anyway.
? Heated seats don't work. I'm not sure if just the dials are
missing, or if there are other missing components.
? Factory steering wheel has been replaced by an after market model.
? No radio, factory speakers.
? The alternator bracket keeps slipping. I replaced the nut, and did
some other stuff that I can't remember, but I never had it working to
my satisfaction.
? The engine burns oil. I was able to pass my emissions test using
smokeless oil.
? The roof antenna is broken.
? The aluminum brackets for the sunroof are broken on both sides.
Other than that the sunroof is in working order.
? There are small screw holes in the hatchback and larger ones in the
spoiler where the body work was attached. The holes in the hatch
have been filled with body filler, but need to be properly sanded and
painted. The spoiler is toast.
? The heating wires in the hatch back are intact.
? The body is painted electric blue. The original colour is black.
? The front bumper was hit after the car was parked. I'm not sure
how extensive the damage is, but I believe that it is limited to the
plastic bumper surround.
? I redid the rear brakes when I purchased the car, but I forgot to
connect the e-brake cable. Easy to fix, but there is no e-brake
right now.
? The air conditioning controls are missing from the dash. The
compressor is present but I don't know if it works.
? The reverse sensor on the transmission for the back-up light
doesn't work.
? The oil pressure light keeps coming on. When I bought the car it
was grounded to the block. I changed the sensor and that didn't
clear it up, but I didn't experience any problems associated with low
pressure so I assume that this is a problem with the circuit board in
the dash.
? Dash has no cracks.
? The car has no battery.
? I think that one of the tires has a slow leak.
The leather seats are in passable but not pristine condition. No
cracks, but visible signs of wear. I have an extra set of rear
seats. I can't remember the odometer reading, but I believe it was
around 120,000 kms.
I'm located just north of Toronto Canada. I'd like around $750 for
the car, but that is negotiable.
